Setting up your first smart home

Smart lighting is often the first step in converting your home to a smart one. With no shortage of companies offering a variety of solutions, it can be difficult to know where to go next. Complicated set-ups, additional hardware, and outside hubs can take the fun and ease out of connected living. That’s why we believe that a smart home should offer simple solutions to everyday challenges and shouldn’t take an engineering degree to get started. To help with this, we’ve been working hard this year to create simple to use, intuitive connections between Nest products and your LIFX lights. We’ve pulled together a quick list below of ways you can use these to simply improve the security, safety, and savings in your home.

Nest Learning Thermostat

Having a connected home doesn’t mean you should be spending more on energy, in fact, it should be helping you save. The Nest Learning Thermostat does just that by automatically dimming your lights to 10% brightness when Nest detects there’s nobody home and by using less power during Rush Hour Rewards times. And you’ll know exactly when these times start after receiving a blink notification from your LIFX lights. The Nest Learning Thermostat also helps keep your home secure, when you’re on vacation it will automatically turn your bulbs on and off randomly so that it looks like you’re at home.

Nest Cam

Automation can at times be complicated, especially when you’re living with more than one person. Nest Cam offers a simple solution to automating your lights in busy homes. When Nest Cam detects a lack of motion it will dim your LIFX lights helping ease in the night. You can also use Nest Cam to turn your lights on when it detects motion, helping to keep your home secure when you’re away.

Nest Protect

Nothing is more important that your family's safety. Buying smart home products built to keep your family safe that are well tested and reliable is key when building out your smart home. Nest Protect is more than your average smoke detector, it can determine the presence of both smoke and carbon monoxide, while also connecting to LIFX as an extra safety measure. When Nest Protect senses smoke or carbon monoxide, your lights flash red to warn you, then switch to full brightness to help you and your family exit safely.

Keeping your loved one's safe is a top priority. Nest is dedicated to creating a thoughtful home: A home that takes care of the people inside it and the world around it. When you connect LIFX with Nest you are making your home a more secure and efficient place, with elegant solutions to everyday problems.
