How to Set Up a LIFX Scene with FX

FX bring your lights to life—literally. From drifting clouds to crackling flames and festive flashes, these dynamic effects transform your space at the tap of a button or a scheduled time. And now, with the power to save FX into Scenes, you can build fully immersive lighting moments that trigger automatically or by voice. Want your living room to glow like a candlelit lounge every evening at 6pm? Easy. Want your holiday lights to dance on command? Done. Here’s how to make it happen:

1. Check FX Compatibility

Only certain LIFX lights support firmware-driven FX that can be saved to a Scene. These effects run directly on the light and can be triggered without the app. Check your product’s compatibility below:

Firmware-based FX and compatible lights:

FX Products
Move Strip, String, Beam, Neon Flex, Permanent Outdoor.
Meteor Strip, String, Beam, Neon Flex, Permanent Outdoor.
Morph Ceiling, Luna, Tile, Candle, Tube.
Flame Ceiling, Luna, Tile, Candle, Tube.
Clouds Ceiling, Luna, Candle, Tube.
Sunrise Ceiling, Luna, Candle, Tube.
Sunset Ceiling, Luna, Candle, Tube.
Candy Cane Permanent Outdoor, String, Spot, Path.
Christmas Tree Permanent Outdoor, String, Spot, Path.

Note: Single-zone lights do not support firmware FX at this time.

2. Start the FX on Your Light

In the LIFX app:

  • Select a compatible light.

  • Choose an FX (e.g., Clouds, Morph, Meteor).

  • Adjust the settings (speed, brightness, etc.) to your preference.

3. Save the Effect to a Scene

  • While the FX is running:

    • Option 1:
      • Remain on the Control Screen
      • Press the ... menu on top menu (next to the heart icon)
      • Tap Save Scene
      • Give the Scene a Name
      • This saves the FX with its settings (speed, color, etc.) to the Scene.
    • Option 2:
      • Navigate back to the Main Dashboard
      • Press the + menu on the bottom menu.
      • Tap New Scene
      • Give the Scene a Name
      • Tick the light you want to save to the Scene
      • This saves the FX with its settings (speed, color, etc.) to the Scene.

4. Trigger the Scene

Once saved, you can trigger the FX in the Scene via:

  • Scene button in the app

  • Voice assistant (e.g., Google Home, Alexa)

  • Automations and schedules

5. Schedule the Scene

To schedule the FX:

  • Go to Schedules in the app.

  • Set the target as the Scene with the saved FX.

  • Set Power to "Activate" (not just "On").

That’s it!

Your lights will now run the selected FX automatically based on your Scene or Schedule—no app required at runtime.
